Such swellings in fossil decapods are usually smaller than ∼10 mm (e.g.,, herein). The largest swelling known to us is ∼16 mm in length in the brachyuran Lophoranina marestiana with a carapace length of 35 mm as figured in Ceccon & De Angeli (their pl. ). Decapod crustaceans from the Ottnangian (middle Burdigalian, Lower Miocene) of the Western and Central Paratethys remain poorly known. In this study, we review and re-describe mud shrimps (Jaxea kuemeli), ghost shrimps (Gourretia sp., Calliax michelottii) and brachyuran crabs of the families Leucosiidae, Polybiidae and Portunidae.A dorsal carapace of the genus Calliax is reported for . The apposition compound eye is the oldest type of compound eye, because more specialized types such as superposition eyes have been shown to be younger than the Carboniferous. In apposition eyes, the rhabdoms are formed like pins that project deeply into the eye and UB W possesses traces of the rhabdoms as cavities (figure 1 a – g). Crustaceans are the most diverse of any group of arthropods and currently thrive in a wide array of habitats. Most species occur primarily in aquatic habitats but some are adapted to live on land. The fossil record extends back to the lower Cambrian and throughout most of this long period, crustacean fossils are associated with a broad range of aquatic habitats, especially marine waters.
